Company History
The Voxel is a privately owned, 8,000 square foot blackbox theater in the heart of Baltimore city. It has two missions: by day, it is the teaching center and research lab for Figure 53; by night, it is a theater, incubator, and resource for performing artists.
​
The theater was built in 1946 and was a popular destination for moviegoers through the late 1980s. It fell into disrepair and went through numerous owners until we purchased it in 2015. We performed a ground-up renovation and reopened the theater in 2020 as a blackbox theater designed for live performance.

The Voxel is a project of Figure 53, a small but mighty Baltimore-based company that makes software for the performing arts. It was built by Chris Ashworth, the founder of Figure 53.
​
At Figure 53, we create software used to run live performances in tens of thousands of venues and over 100 countries around the world. While our company is small, our influence on the performing arts is large. You’ll find our software in nearly every theater you can imagine: from basement venues to the world's largest arenas. Design professionals rely on us for virtually every Broadway performance, for high profile concerts, and for special events like the Olympics. Our software is what people use to put on live shows.
